Samoa Hamvention: Atsu 5W1SA and Jacek 5W0AF

News 2026-09-24: 5W0AF DXpedition started. On the second day of the expedition, the power amplifier broke down. Unfortunately, it was a major failure that affected the control system. I switched to QRP operation but the results were poor and the number of contacts dropped drastically. Fortunately, I managed to get in touch with Atsu (5W0SA), who offered to lend me an amplifier — though, sadly, that one also turned out to be faulty. Given the situation, he generously offered to lend me his primary amplifier in a few days, once he finishes the RTTY contest. The solidarity and willingness to help among radio amateurs are truly remarkable—thank you, Atsu!

News 2026-09-08: This time, everything is on track! I depart Poland on Sept 16th for New Zealand. I’ve built in a 2.5-day layover in ZL specifically as a "safety margin" for my gear and baggage, just in case of delays. Fingers crossed that all goes well! I expect to land in Samoa on Sept 21st and will be QRV until Oct 12th. Strictly SSB. Expect to hear 5W0AF very soon!
During the DXpedition I will be trying to send news and pictures to Tom SP5UAF and he will be updating the website with the most recent information.

Latest News: In a few days, I was supposed to fly to Apia via Doha and Brisbane to activate 5W0AF. Since all my Qatar Airways flights have been cancelled. The only sensible option is to change the route and postpone the DXpedition. I booked a new route from EU for the autumn of 2026. If nothing happens, I shall be active in Samoa from 21 Sept. to 12 Oct. This has been a very difficult decision, as all arrangements were in place. My callsign 5W0AF remains intact. See info below if you want to consider additional support; the cost of Dxpedition grows🥲. Jacek, SP5EAQ

DXpedition Info

  • In 2017, I was active from Samoa twice, en route to Tokelau, using callsign 5W0AF. I am currently planning to spend three weeks in Samoa, starting March 22, 2026, with the same callsign.
  • I intend to participate in the WPX SSB Contest with the choice of band depending on propagation conditions at the time.
  • As before, my QTH will be just outside Apia, in Vaiala (OC-097).
  • I will be operating exclusively on SSB across the 10-40 meter bands using a GP7 vertical antenna provided by SP7GXP and on the 80-meter band (delta). My setup will include an FT710 transceiver with a homemade amplifier.
